I recently designed a 1-bedroom basement apartment, transforming it into a comfortable and functional living space. I started by evaluating the existing layout and determining the optimal floor plan.
The kitchenette was designed to be compact yet functional, featuring a refrigerator, stove, sink, and countertop. I added storage options like cabinets and incorporated a small dining area.
Overall
This was an existing basement unit where the owner wanted to keep excess to some of the space. The unit was to be registered as a two unit dwelling per the bylaws.
I designed the space to provide a washroom and storage for the ground floor unit in the basemnt while keeping both units seperated by firewall.
The challenge in designing this basement unit was that the homeowner wanted access to the washroom, closet and storage room in the basement. The unit was to be registered as a separate unit. So I provided firewall between the units to provide fire separation as per Ontario Building Code.
As I embarked on the task of converting an open space bedroom basement into a two-bedroom layout, I carefully assessed the existing space. Standing in the middle of the open area, I took in the dimensions, considering the potential for dividing it into separate bedrooms.
To maintain a sense of harmony, I ensured that the bedrooms were proportionate in size. This allowed for comfortable furniture
